495. Thich Nhat Hahn. VIETNAM. Lotus in a Sea of Fire. NY: Hill & Wang (1967). The simultaneous issue in wrappers of this short "Buddhist proposal for peace" with an introduction by Thomas Merton. Nhat Hahn has also published much poetry of the war, and in recent years has been one of the Buddhist voices most widely published and read by the "New Age" movement, an outgrowth of the counterculture of the 1960's and, by association, the antiwar movement. Fine copy.

Personal account of a founder of the National Liberation Front and former Minister of Justice in the provisional Viet Cong government, who left Vietnam as a "boat person" after the war, when he felt that the revolution had been subverted and betrayed. 567. (Murray, Robin). VIETNAM. No. 1 in the READ-IN series. Lon: Eyre & Spottiswoode (1965). Quarto, printed wrappers, 221 pages. Extensive compilation of material on the war to that date, including published papers, excerpts from speeches and monitored radio sources, published government documents, a piece from the diary of a Vietcong guerrilla, etc. Very good.

568. Raskin, Marcus G. and Bernard B. Fall. THE VIET-NAM READER. NY: RH (1965). First printing of this important anthology of "Articles and Documents on American Foreign Policy and the Viet-Nam Crisis," edited by Raskin and Fall. This copy inscribed by Bernard Fall in the month of publication to a former diplomat and later university professor: "To Professor and Mrs. ___/ this distressing tale of how not to make foregin policy. With affectionate regards, Bernard Fall." Fall was the first, most important, and most informed Western reporter on Vietnam, particularly with regard to understanding the Vietnamese people and the motivations of the Vietnamese communist and religious leaders. He was also a historian, and had studied both the strategies and the tactics of the French and Vietnamese in the French Indochina war. He was killed in action in Vietnam in 1967, and books inscribed by him are very scarce. Fine in near fine dust jacket.

Report of the "Ann Arbor Conference" on the war, an early conference which invited scholars from around the world, formed "study groups" on various problems and came up with both individual and groups reports. Explicitly linked to the antiwar movement. Several of the scholars participating were Asians. Very good.

Includes much analysis, both psychological as well as statistical, and a lesser amount of personal anecdotes and poetry. A very good copy.

Published as a study guide and companion volume to Stanley Karnow's Vietnam and the 13-part television series which aired in conjunction with the book's publication. 596. Armbruster, Frank E. CAN WE WIN IN VIETNAM?. NY: Praeger (1968). A team of Hudson Institute political-military analysts discuss the question of whether America can "win" in Vietnam. Completed around the time of the Tet offensive, the book has a short prefatory note about the authors' feelings about its effect on the outcome of the war. Fine in very good dust jacket.
