615. Brown, Stuart Gerry. THE PRESIDENCY ON TRIAL. Robert Kennedy's 1968 Campaign and Afterwards. Honolulu: University Press of Hawaii, 1972. A key chapter called "Vietnam and the Direction of Foreign Policy" discusses the effect of the war on JFK's administration as well as the evolution of Robert from an advocate of the war to a national leader of the opposition. This copy is very good, lacking the dust jacket, and inscribed by the author.

674. Eden, Anthony, Earl of Avon. TOWARD PEACE IN INDOCHINA. Bos: HM, 1966. A short volume by the former Prime Minister of Great Britain, arguing that the 1954 Geneva Accords -- which proposed independence and neutrality for the nations of Southeast Asia -- provide the best model for a solution to the ongoing crisis in Vietnam in the 1960s. Eden was Prime Minister in the '50s, during the Suez Crisis, an experience which no doubt helped temper his views toward what we would now call "Third World" aspirations. An uncommon book in its own right, this copy is inscribed by the author to Drew Middleton, longtime Chief Correspondent in Southeast Asia for The New York Times. Inscribed "with much gratitude" in the year of publication. A significant association. Fine copy without dj.

679. (Ephemera). SPRING MOBILIZATION COMMITTEE TO END THE WAR IN VIETNAM. NY: (c.1967). A folder of 37 items (mostly mechanically reproduced 8 1/2 by 11" sheets) concerning antiwar demonstrations planned by the Spring Mobilization Committee founded by Rev. A.J. Muste. The organization worked primarily through college campuses both with students and faculty; it was a phenomenon of the times and a precursor to the many national demonstrations of today. A collection of articles appraising the war from legal perspectives, beginning with relevant historical background essays by John Stuart Mill and others. Fine in dust jacket.

684. Fall, Bernard B. INFORMAL COMMUNICATIONS IN SOUTHEAST ASIA. (Washington, DC) (Howard University) (1960). Quarto; letter-size sheets clasp-bound in black binder. An early piece by this leading scholar on Southeast Asia: presumably written for use by other academics and perhaps members of the U.S. government. Fine copy. Very scarce book by this important writer.

685. Fall, Bernard. LE VIET MINH 1945 - 1960. Paris: Armand Colin, 1960. The definitive history of the Vietnamese Communists, prior to U.S. involvement. Never published in this country in a trade edition, this is nonetheless the landmark study of the Vietnamese insurgent movement. This copy fine in wrappers in a near fine dust jacket, and warmly inscribed by the author in French to his "friend and guide", and dated 1960. Extremely scarce and an extremely important book; a presentation copy such as this constitutes a true rarity.

686. Fall, Bernard B. STREET WITHOUT JOY. Indochina at War, 1946-54. Harrisburg: Stackpole (1961). Fall's classic study of the failure of French policy and tactics in Southeast Asia, and the American penchant for following the footsteps of the French, duplicating their erroneous assumptions and their mistakes. Perhaps the single most insightful volume on the Indochina war(s). This is the first edition, with previous owner name and date ("1961"); very good, lacking dust jacket. A very scarce book in the first edition: in 12 years of looking, this is the first copy I have seen.

688. -. Another copy, fourth edition (1964), revised. This copy is inscribed by the author one month after publication to a Major Weber, "with best wishes." Fine in near fine dust jacket. The fourth edition was the last, and is considered the best edition. Laid into this copy is a Time magazine obituary of Fall. A near-legendary book, this edition having been re-wrritten to include the Americans in Vietnam (an early commentary thus) and probably the best single volume on both the French and the Americans in Vietnam.
