Garrett is both a highly praised writer in his own right, especially as the author of a number of highly literary historical novels of the Elizabethan era, and was also the longtime director of the Hollins College writing program, which produced a number of noteworthy writers, including Annie Dillard, Madison Smartt Bell, and others.
